Department of Mathematics and Statistics

Math isn’t just numbers on a page, it’s a way of thinking that leads to opportunity. At NAU’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics, you’ll work with professors who care about your success and help you find the path that prepares you for what’s next.

Mathematics in action

More than equations and datasets, mathematics and statistics help you understand patterns, measure uncertainty, and predicting outcomes. You might apply mathematical thinking to challenges like analyzing climate data, modeling financial risk, optimizing engineering systems, or designing algorithms. If you enjoy puzzles, patterns, and logic, mathematics and statistics offer rewarding challenges and practical skills that can prepare you to solve meaningful problems in many different fields.

Why study Mathematics and Statistics at NAU

At NAU, you’ll find programs designed to help you grow as a thinker and problem-solver. With small classes and faculty mentors, you’ll build the confidence and momentum you need to succeed. You can choose from degree paths in mathematics, data science, and mathematics education, along with minors in actuarial science, mathematics, mathematics education, and statistics.

You’ll also have access to specialized resources like the Lumberjack Mathematics Center and the Statistical Consulting Lab and have the option to take your mathematical journey further with master's degrees in mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education.

Learning outcomes

As a Mathematics and Statistics major at NAU, you will:

  • develop a deep understanding of the theoretical aspects of mathematics, particularly in the areas of analysis, abstract algebra and statistics, to analyze the structure of mathematical objects and formulate logical arguments for general mathematical propositions.
  • use fundamental skills to read and interpret mathematical literature (textbooks, journals, papers, etc.) to continue independent learning and reasoning.
  • communicate mathematical principles and ideas with clarity and coherence, both written and verbally, demonstrating communication skills to be used in any future career.
  • collaborate with peers and/or faculty on mathematical problems demonstrating cooperative working skills.

Help where you need it

Lumberjack Mathematics Center

The Lumberjack Mathematics Center (LMC) is designed to support students who are completing a general education requirement or pursuing a mathematics-related major. Located in the Student and Academic Services building, the LMC provides support for courses including MAT 100, MAT 108, MAT 114, and MAT 125.

You’ll find help when you need it, with instructors and peer tutors known as Math Jacks available to answer questions, along with free 45-minute one-on-one tutoring appointments. The LMC also includes a dedicated testing space where you can take proctored exams early when needed, giving you the structure and support to stay on track.

Peak Performance

Peak Performance is a free online summer program designed to help prepare you for your next mathematics course. Through personalized coaching and targeted online practice, you’ll start preparing for the Math Placement Test or strengthen foundational skills before the semester begins. Open to all students, Peak Performance gives you the opportunity to refresh your mathematics skills at your own pace so you can start the academic year feeling more prepared.

Mathematics placement

Because students arrive at NAU with different mathematics backgrounds and experiences, placement uses several factors to determine which mathematics courses you’re eligible to take. Understanding your placement early helps you plan your schedule and start in the class that’s right for you. Visit the Math Placement website and talk with your academic advisor to get started.

Challenge examinations

Challenge Exams give you the opportunity to earn college credit for mathematics courses you’ve already mastered. If you have prior experience with course material, you may be able to demonstrate your knowledge in a single exam and move ahead to more advanced coursework.

Faculty mentorship

You’ll have the opportunity to work alongside faculty who are recognized leaders in fields ranging from algebraic combinations, topology, graph theory, data science, and bioinformatics. Our mentorship model ensures that students aren't just names on a roster, but active collaborators in cutting-edge discovery.

When it comes to quality and quantity of undergraduate and graduate research, we punch above our weight. Join a community where high-level expertise meets a personal commitment to student success.

Scholarships and financial aid

NAU is committed to keeping high-quality education accessible and affordable. As a Mathematics and Statistics student, you can search ScholarshipUniverse for scholarships that align with your goals and interests, earn money through student jobs or teaching assistantships, and access financial aid resources, all to help you focus on academics without added stress.

Career readiness

Throughout your coursework in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, you’ll strengthen skills that apply to any industry: data analysis, programming, teaching, problem-solving, and collaboration. By the time you graduate, you’ll know how to use math and statistics to teach, model systems, drive decisions, and create solutions in classrooms, labs, tech companies, financial firms, research organizations, and beyond!

Advance you studies in Mathematics and Statistics

As a graduate student, you can take your studies further through master’s programs in Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science, or Mathematics Education. Whether you pursue a research-focused or professional track, you’ll deepen your expertise and expand your impact in teaching, analytics, and scholarship. Each year, the department awards approximately 25–30 graduate teaching assistantships. These positions provide valuable classroom experience, financial support, and mentorship as you advance your academic and professional goals.
